UN condemns Israel's use of weapons

[cross posted at the Blogger edition of Cake or Death]

Aah, the UN, that emminent association of morality that negotiates with terrorists as if they were countries, puts human rights abusers on the Human Rights Council, and ignores horrific abuses around the world unless it can turn a profit (see Oil for Food).
Well, they're at it again. Now Israel's has been condemned for waging war up until the ceasefire. Maybe my definition of ceasefire is wrong, but don't you stop waging war after a ceasefire, not before?

The UN has accused the IAF of using cluster bomblets, which have the explosive force to destroy armored vehicles, and are packed into bombs dropped from aircrafts or into artillery shells.

[...] The UN humanitarian chief, Jan Egeland, said Wednesday that a large portion of the bombs dropped on Lebanon had failed to explode on impact and were continuing to maim and kill civilians every day.

He said he was particularly disturbed that Israel had used the bombs even as the August 14 cease-fire loomed.

So looming ceasefire means stop? I don't get it... Nevermind that clusterbombs are perfectly legal, internationally used munitions. There are no international laws banning their use.

And what about condemnation for Leba-Hezbollahnan? Perhaps Jan Egeland missed the whole prelude to the war, that Hezbollah terrorists kidnapped Israeli soldiers. Oh, and maybe Jan Egeland missed the news stories where Hezbollah was bombing civilian cites in Israeli cities. And perhaps Jan Egeland forgot the Hezbollah IS A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION!!!

Jan... Get your head out of your ass...

California legislature continues to try to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants

[cross posted at my other Cake or Death blog]

At least Schwarzenegger continues to get this issue right even if he may be wrong on the CO2 emissions bill.

SACRAMENTO, August 31, 2006 - The latest attempt to allow illegal immigrants to obtain California driver's licenses passed the Legislature on Wednesday, but it was doomed as soon as the final vote was taken.

A spokeswoman said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will veto it.

"The governor will not sign any legislation that in any way threatens public safety," spokeswoman Margita Thompson said.

The bill that passed the Senate on a 21-13 vote was lawmakers' eighth attempt at legalizing driver's' licenses for illegal immigrants. It was sent to Schwarzenegger with no debate and the bare majority of votes needed.

The measure by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would overturn a 1993 law that prohibits the state from issuing licenses to drivers who cannot prove they are in the country legally.

Talk about politicians pandering to their base.

We've really got to get rid of Gil Cedillo. Driver's licenses for illegal immigrants is his pet project and this is the eighth time he's tried to get this type of bill passed.

If Arnold ever signs one of these into law, he can start digging his own political grave.

UPDATE @ 12:12pm: HotAir's latest Vent also focuses on illegal immigration, briefly discussing a Post Office in Mayfield, CA where pro-illegal immigration protestors flew a Mexican flag before going on with a trailer for an upcoming documentary, Border War.

Check it out.

Schwarzenegger to sign most restrictive CO2 emmisions bill in nation

[cross posted at the original Cake or Death]

Last week I gave Arnie a thumbs up for his solar power initiative
that makes new home manufacturers offer the panels as an option on new construction, but this bill could be disasterous for the California economy.

... Although the deal in California is strongly opposed by Republicans in the Legislature and many business leaders across the state, it ensured that a bill on the restrictions would be passed before the legislative session ended Thursday and would be signed by Schwarzenegger, the leaders said Wednesday.

The first major controls are scheduled to begin in 2012, with the aim of reducing the emissions to their level of 1990. The legislation allows for incentives to businesses to help reach the goals, but opponents warn that the state may be sacrificing its economic interests for a quixotic goal.

"If our manufacturers leave, whether for North Carolina or China, and they take their greenhouse gases with them, we might not have solved the problem but exacerbated it instead," said Allan Zaremberg, president of the state Chamber of Commerce, which led opposition to the measure.

I can't help but agree with that. I was a big fan of Arnold because when he led the recall of Gray Davis, one of his platforms was bringing business back to California. This won't help that. And if business leaves California, some will stay in the US, but how much will go to the cheaper labor, better tax codes, and less restrictive environmental codes? Whether that's Arizona, Nevada, Mexico, or China it's not California.

I guess we don't value our economy that is ranked 10th in the world...

UPDATE @ 3:59pm on 9/1: An interesting article from the utility companies' perspectives. PG&E reversed its position on the bill after a revision was added that would allow for suspension of the law should the economy be "significantly hurt" by the reduction in emissions. The article also points out that PG&E is less likely to be as greatly affected by the bill due to the fact that they don't rely on coal for energy production. The major utilities will be the most affected because of their reliance on coal-fired power whereas smaller, independent producers rely more on natural gas and some renewable resources.

Fantasy baseball time and I can smell the playoffs

[cross posted at my blogger edition of Cake or Death]

I clinched a playoff spot with a punishing win against GOP and the City. GOP and College has the full recap...

Wookies Will Win - 10
Robots Eat Babies - 1 (Tie in Saves)

Yoo know, it's fun to see my brother get beat, but not that bad. Wookies were pissed about losing to fmragtops last week, and it showed. I mean this one wasn't even really close. Wookies dominated most of the pitching stats, and killed with an ERA of only 3.36. Batting was all Wookies. With Chipper, Dye, and Delgado combining for 12 Home Runs, it's pretty easy to see why he's first. Also, wookies are locked for the playoffs.
Game MVP: Jermaine Dye - 8 times across the plate, 11 RBI's and 5 home runs with a .393 average.
Game Wash-Out: The Man - Ater a 10-1 win last week, being on vaccation this week vs. the number one team may have blown the Robot's chances at a playoff spot. At least he had fun though.

I've really got to say the big win was thanks in most part to a quick start last Tuesday. The Cards and Mets played and Pujols and Delgado combined for 4 HRs and 12 RBIs. In one game. That gave me a headstart and I never looked back. A game ball also go to John Smoltz who came through with 2 big wins that combined for an ERA of 0.56 and a WHIP of 0.44. Hopefully I can keep this momentum going; we've got this last week to tune up and then it's playoff time! If I can keep my 1st place ranking I get a bye in the first round, so there's no room to slack off.

Ahmadinejad challenges Bush to a televised debate

[cross posted at the original Cake or Death]

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Now we know he's certifiable.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad voiced defiance on Tuesday as a deadline neared for Iran to halt work the West fears is a step toward building nuclear bombs, and challenged President Bush to a televised debate.

"Peaceful nuclear energy is the right of the Iranian nation. The Iranian nation has chosen that based upon international regulations, it wants to use it and no one can stop it," he told a news conference.

The U.N. Security Council has given Iran until Thursday to suspend uranium enrichment -- a process which can produce fuel for civilian reactors or explosive material for warheads -- and has threatened sanctions unless it does so.

A debate is never going to happen. All it does is legitimize Wacky-pants Ahmadinejad, and the man is anything but legitimate. Nuclear power isn't a natural right like breathing our not having your head cut off by terrorists. You've got to earn the respect of the international community and his antisemetic rants won't get him respect.

So hopefully Dubya gets a good laugh at this one, then figures out a way to diplomatically make life so miserable for Wacky-pants Ahmadinejad that he does something rash that the UN can't wishfully dismiss like they've done with Sudan, Lebanon, etc...

Nasrallah didn't think the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers would lead to war

[cross posted at the other Cake or Death]

That's the kind of statement that ought to make Israel and the US feel better about their course of action in prosecuting the GWOT harshly as opposed to taking UN brokered ceasfires. Condi, please take notes... Sometimes war is the answer.

BEIRUT - The leader of Hezbollah, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, has said in a television interview that he would not have ordered the capture of two Israeli soldiers had he known that it would lead to such a war.

Guerrillas from Hezbollah, an Islamic militant group, killed three Israeli soldiers and seized two others in a cross-border raid on July 12, setting off 34 days of fighting that ended with a cease-fire on Aug. 14.

"We did not think, even 1 percent, that the capture would lead to a war at this time and of this magnitude," Nasrallah told New TV of Lebanon in an interview that was aired Sunday. Asked if he would have ordered the operation if he had known on July 11 that it would lead to such a war, Nasrallah answered: "No, absolutely not."

To me that's an invitation to bombard the terrorists whenever they do something. Kidnap a soldier; bomb the hell out of them. Kidnap a journalist; bomb the hell out of them. Kidnap a puppy; bomb the hell out of them.

What have I been saying all along? The terrorist swine see negotiations as a victory against a passive, spineless enemy who doesn't have the gumption to see anything related to lethal force through to the end. The only language they understand is violence, and apparently Israel's 34 days of violence made an impression on Nasrallah.

Good work Israel.

As the blog turns... a brief public service announcement

[cross posted at the original Cake or Death]

For the three of you who are regular readers, you may have noticed a small change on Cake or Death. I've sold out and signed up with AdSense. Well, maybe not a sellout, but I figure since I do spend a fair amount of time keeping the content here up to date, I might as well get paid a few pennies for the efforts.

I just signed up today, and there's a review period as the AdSense gurus figure out the best possible way to use my blog for their advertising, so I won't get paid for anything right away. But don't let that stop you. Go ahead, click on an ad when you stop by.

Project 2,996

[cross posted at the original Cake or Death]

With the fifth anniversary of September 11th approaching, an effort to get the blogosphere together for a memorial has been brewing. Project 2,996 is trying to get 2,996 bloggers to post on September 11th something about a single victim that died that day. That way each individual gets a post dedicated to them and them alone. It's a great idea, and My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy led me to it.

When I signed up last night they were still about 400 bloggers short of 2,996. So if you'd like to dedicate a post to the memory of a 9/11 victim head here to sign up. Don't worry about not knowing someone who died that day, you'll be given a name at random to memorialize.

If you don't have a blog, just spend a little time that day jumping between blog posts. Everyone who died that day was someones son or daughter, father or mother, brother, sister or friend.

Take some time to pay your repsects by remembering them and their familes.

I had an epiphany today. A realization that hit me like a bolt of lightning.

Since the fetching Mrs. Wookie is pregnant with a girl, that means I'm going to have to pay for her wedding... eventually... hopefully in like 40 years...

The first words out of my mouth after this unusual moment of clarity... ?

12 arrested after Northwest flight was diverted just after takeoff

[cross posted at Cake or Death on Blogger]

Breaking...

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Dutch F-16s escorted a Northwest Airlines flight bound for India back to an airport here Wednesday after the pilot radioed for help, and police arrested 12 passengers who had aroused suspicions, authorities said.

[...] While Flight NO0042 was over German airspace shortly after takeoff, the pilot radioed for permission to return to Schiphol Airport and asked for an escort of jet fighters because some of the passengers were acting suspiciously, the Defense Ministry said.

"A number of them behaved, in the opinion of the crew, in a suspicious manner," said the ministry. "As a result, the captain asked to return to Schiphol."

A U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, said crew members and air marshals observed the passengers trying to use cell phones and passing them among themselves while the airliner was taking off.

This is just the world we live in now...

Memo to all airline passengers: Don't do anything suspicious. Unless you want to get arrested...

UPDATED @ 3:53pm: CNN reports air marshals were on board and were instrumental in making the call to return to Amsterdam along with the pilot.

Solar panels now a required option on all new homes

[cross linked at my other Cake or Death blog]

Schwarzenegger just signed the bill on Monday.
It's just another example of a Republican singled handedly destroying the environment... oh... wait...

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Monday legislation that is expected to boost his plan to place solar panels on 1 million rooftops and create the equivalent of five new modern power plants.

The legislation, authored by Sen. Kevin Murray, D-Los Angeles, requires homebuilders to make rooftop solar panels an option for buyers of new homes in all housing tracts of at least 50 houses, beginning on Jan. 1, 2011.

"When you go in to buy a home, you'll pick your carpet, you'll pick your tile and hopefully you'll pick what type of solar roof you want," Murray said at a bill-signing ceremony in Los Angeles.

This is where I find myself getting conflicted much of the time. I generally hate it when government requires businesses to do anything. Anti-smoking laws are a great example. But I think this law might actually be a good idea. First off, it doesn't require that all new homes have them installed, it just requires that buyers be given the option by the manufacturer. No harm in that, right? If you want to have the solar panels you can get them and don't have to find someone after the house is built to install them for you. And as the article mentions, if the anticipated numbers are achieved, it could add the equivalent of 5 new power plants in California. Hell, even if it only adds one equivalent power plant, it's less strain on existing plants, less use of fossil fuels to create our energy, and overall, it's better for the environment. Yes, I said environment. Republicans aren't out to destroy the environment, contrary to popular opinion.

One small downside is that it doesn't take effect until 2011. That's two and a half years before we see these solar options available directly from the manufacturer. Seems a bit much to me, but you can't have everything.

The coolest thing that this bill allows that I didn't quote above is that if your panels create more energy than you consume, you can sell that energy to your electric company. That's right... Sell. Back. To. Your. Utility. So during those winter months when my electric bill is $40 if I produce more energy than I use, I would get credits to my account to help pay for the AC during the summer that's bumped my bill upwards of $250.

Now on a costs vs. benefits look, California residents
can go here to get an estimate on the costs of installation, potential electric bill savings based on your zip code, and environmental benefits your system would create. The estimator starts you on a small 1.0 kW series of panels, but will allow you to adjust and see the costs and savings involved if you buy more or less. For me, it said a 1.0 kW series of panels would cost $8000 and save me an estimated $368 a year on electricity. So at that rate it would take 21 years for the panels to have paid for themselves. Now the estimator also mentions incentives that could cut the installation costs in half, which would take a little over 10 years to pay off. That's still not quite fast enough for me if I'm paying for this out of pocket, even with the incentives mainly because most people don't stay in the same home for that long. But if your manufacturer is putting them up for you, you'll just roll those costs into your home loan as opposed to paying out of pocket or taking out a home equity line to pay for the costs of doing it yourself. In your home loan it would cost you pennies a month over the 30 year life of your loan.

So overall this could be a good thing. Still we've got to wait until 2011... But maybe by then, I'll be in the market for a new house...

Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we?

[cross posted at the original Cake or Death]

Every once and a while you actually get something good forwarded to you. Something other than a chain letter.

Something like this...

Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or was it not started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September 11,2001

Were people from all over the world, mostly Americans, not brutally murdered that day, in downtown Manhattan, across the Potomac from our nation's capitol and in a field in Pennsylvania? Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?

And I'm supposed to care that a copy of the Koran was "desecrated" when an overworked American soldier kicked it or got it wet? Well, I don't. I don't care at all.

I'll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.

I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere possession of which is a crime in Saudi Arabia.

I'll care when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi tells the world he is sorry for hacking off Nick Berg's head while Berg screamed through his gurgling, slashed throat.

I'll care when the cowardly so-called "insurgents" in Iraq come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques.

I'll care when the mindless zealots who blow themselves up in search of nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their suicide bombs.

I'll care when the American media stops pretending that their First Amendment liberties are somehow derived from international law instead of the United States Constitution's Bill of Rights. In the meantime, when I hear a story about a brave Marine roughing up an Iraqi terrorist to obtain information, know this: I don't care.

When I see a fuzzy photo of a pile of naked Iraqi prisoners who have been humiliated in what amounts to a college hazing incident, rest assured that I don't care.

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank that I don't care.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed "special" food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being "mishandled," you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts that I don't care.

And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled "Koran" and other times "Quran." Well, Jimmy Crack Corn and ---- you got it, I DON'T CARE!

I think that just about sums it up...

9/11 comic released

[cross posted at my other Cake or Death blog]

The Today show this morning seemed to be trying to make a big deal out of this for whatever reason...

NEW YORK — It looks like a comic book and reads like a comic book, but the subject matter is deadly serious: what went wrong before, during and after 9/11.

The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation (Hill and Wang, $16.95 paperback, $30 hardcover), based on the government commission report that became a best seller in 2004, arrives Tuesday.

My initial reaction was to cringe a bit at the thought, but when David "Cheney has me on speed dial" Gregory interviewed the creators, they were very up front about their purpose. The wanted to create a visual representation of the 9/11 Report. That's it. No personal views or biases, just telling the story of what happened that day and maybe making the timeline a little easier to understand by actually putting in times things happened that day. The authors mentioned they couldn't read the 9/11 Report because it was too dense, to hard to follow. They're quoted in the article as saying, "we're in the business of clarification." Hopefully this graphic novel can clarify that report. Think of it like Cliff Notes for a hugely important document.

Gregory and the Today Show tried to up the controversy around it by interviewing a family member who lost a loved one on 9/11. She of course didn't think the graphic covel/comic was appropriate, but with all due respect to her and the loss she suffered, she's coming from a distincly biased point of view. What would she feel is an appropriate portrayal of that days events. Movies have been and will continue to be made about that day, novels and biographies have been and will be written about people's experiences that day. Are those appropriate? I'd say depending on how they approach the subject, yes, they're more than likely completely appropriate. And everything I've seen about this release is just as good.

Some will argue that kids shouldn't see it. Well, that's really up to the parents, isn't it. Parents let their kids watch all kind of stuff that they shouldn't; is this really going to be any worse than anything they'll see on TV or at the movies? I'd think this might even help some kids grasp the importance of the events that day. It might help them understand the far reaching consequences of the tragedy on 9/11.

And if that's the case, I say that this will probably help more people than it will harm. Anyone who might not find it appropriate I'd have to say don't buy it. Just like with United 93, World Trade Center, or any other movie about 9/11, if you're not ready to handle the story in those mediums then don't watch them. I know when United 93 came out, the fetching Mrs. Wookie, wouldn't go see it with me, because she didn't feel like she could handle the overwhelming emotions from that day. I can respect that, because she could differentiate between what she could handle and what the public could handle.

I'm definitely going to have to take a look at the book... see what it's all about. And unless there's some gross negligence that went in to creating the book, I'd say it's at the very least worth checking out. Give it a chance.
